Lorne Korman PhD R. Psych

Dr. Lorne Korman is a registered psychologist (#1756) and Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at UBC.  Previously he was Head of the Anger and Addiction Clinic at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and Research Director of the BC Youth Concurrent Disorders Network.

Dr. Korman received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from York University, where his research focused on emotion and change in Emotion Focused and Client Centred Psychotherapy. He completed intensive training in DBT has 25 years of experience in DBT.  Dr. Korman has participated in 4 clinical trials of DBT and DBT adaptations and was the principal investigator in 2 clinical trials adapting DBT to help adults and youth with anger problems.

Dr. Korman has published numerous articles and chapters on DBT, most recently co-authoring a chapter with Dr. Kyle Burns on treating suicidal adolescents who have concurrent substance use disorders.  For a list of some of his publications, click here. He has trained hundreds of clinicians across Canada in DBT, consulted to numerous DBT programs, and has supervised residents, fellows, and interns in DBT.

Carl Wiebe MD FCFP FRCPC

Carl Wiebe is a psychiatrist with a long history as a family doctor in both rural and academic urban settings. He has long had an interest in mental health, from supporting emergency personnel in rural isolated settings to working with military personnel to caring for pregnant traumatized women with substance use issues. He recently completed specialty training in psychiatry and has trained with mentors both in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as dialectical behavior therapy with Kyle Burns and Lorne Korman. He continues with his interest in life long learning and education, working with residents both in Family Medicine as well as Psychiatry.
 
Currently Carl works in private practice at the Vancouver Psychotherapy Centre.  He also teaches in the department of Psychiatry and Family Practice at UBC.

DIRECTOR • PSYCHIATRIST

Kyle Burns MD FRCPC

Kyle Burns is a psychiatrist working in British Columbia, Canada and a clinical instructor at the University of British Columbia.  He has a special interest in people who have multiple barriers.  He has experience in working with marginalized young adults and individuals who are Deaf or hard of hearing.  

He has training and experience in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), a treatment designed to address many of the challenges in working with complex disorders.  He has been instrumental in establishing three separate DBT teams in Vancouver, British Columbia.  He has provided training in DBT to a number of psychiatry residents.  He currently works at the VanPsych and with the DBT team with the inner city youth mental health program.  He has also been a consultant to the Provincial Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services and the Deaf Well-Being Program.

He has worked with Dr. Lorne Korman, an expert in DBT and the treatment of anger, and they recently published a chapter on treating youth with concurrent substance use and suicidal behaviours.

PSYCHIATRIST

Jennifer Rozylo, MD FRCPC

Dr. Jennifer Rozylo is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist. She currently works with VanPsych and Fraser Health. She completed her Psychiatry Residency and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at the University of British Columbia.

Dr. Rozylo is part of the clinical team on the Adolescent Psychiatric Unit at Surrey Memorial Hospital and maintains a private practice at VanPsych. She also serves as the Medical Lead for Outpatient Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Services within Fraser Health.

Her clinical interests span the full range of child and adolescent mental health, with particular expertise in managing acute presentations in children and youth, as well as providing Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) for adolescents and adults.

PSYCHOLOGIST

Jennifer Na, PhD R.Psych

Dr. Jennifer Na is a registered psychologist (#2730) with the College of Health and Care Professionals BC. Dr. Na provides psychological assessment and treatment for difficulties related to emotion regulation, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and depression. Her clinical training and practice consist of evidence-based approaches including DBT and CBT. Her therapeutic approach is compassionate, collaborative and culturally-sensitive. She received her PhD in Clinical Psychology at University of British Columbia (UBC). She completed a pre-doctoral clinical residency at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in the Borderline Personality Disorder Clinic and Women’s Trauma Program. Prior to that, she completed extensive training in a variety of settings, including Vancouver Coastal Health (Mood Disorders Inpatient Unit, BC Psychosis Program), UBC Psychology Clinic, Ministry of Child and Development, Vancouver CBT Centre, and VanPsych.

FAMILY PHYSICIAN

Jennifer Tong, MD CCFP FCFP

Dr. Jennifer Y. Tong is a Family Medicine Specialist in Mental Health who has been practicing medicine in Greater Vancouver for over 18 years.  She currently works as a member of the VanPsych team in serving youth, adults, and families.  In addition, she provides access to mental health care to highschool students through the Vancouver Coastal Health school doctor program.  Dr. Tong is a Clinical Instructor with the UBC Faculty of Medicine and has been teaching and mentoring medical students for over a decade. She is active in medical advocacy and has served in leadership roles with such associations as BC Family Doctors and Doctors of BC.  Her education includes specialty training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, as well as other evidence-based interventions.  She completed her undergraduate (BSc), medical (MD), and family practice residency training (CCFP) at UBC.  She has Fellowship designation from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (FCFP), and R3 Enhanced Skills Training in Mental Health through the UBC Department of Family Practice.  Prior to joining VanPsych, Dr.Tong worked as a family physician in a multi-physician primary care clinic in East Vancouver, serving a population with a high number of families and individuals with mental health needs.
